Intro to GIS

Workshop preparation

Prior to completing the workshop, please download and install the QGIS software and plugins listed below.

QGIS Software

  • Go to https://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html:
    • For Windows Operating Systems, download the standalone installer for the latest release
    • For Mac Operating Systems, download the all-in-one, signed installers for the latest release
  • Once downloaded, open the executable file and follow the steps to install QGIS

QGIS Plugins

The QGIS Plugin, QuickMapServices, will be used in this workshop. Follow the steps below to install the plugin.

  • Open the QGIS software
  • Go to the Plugins menu > Manage and Install Plugins…
  • Search for “QuickMapServices”
  • Click Install plugin
  • To verify the plugin has been installed, go to the Web menu > QuickMapServices and click on OSM Standard
